With the summer vacation in full swing, now is the perfect time to start tweaking ideas for outings to keep the family entertained, especially as the sunny days arrive.
Going outside is not only great for enjoying the good weather, but with the threat of covid still in place, it’s also much safer.
Fortunately, Scotland is full of excellent wildlife centers, zoos and children’s farms, perfect for helping curious children learn about the natural world around them.
Whether it’s getting up close to farm animals or learning about exotic species, here are some of the best kids’ farms and zoos to check out to keep kids happy during the summer.
LOVE Gorgie Farm, Edinburgh

You don’t need to book in advance, but staff will monitor the numbers based on their space and capacity and government guidelines on social distancing.
You will find lots of cute animals, a play park, and even the chance to enjoy fun events like alpaca trekking.
Highland Wildlife Park, Kingussie

Recently, three rare Amur Tiger cubs were born in the park, while other residents like elusive snow leopards, cuddly polar bears and fascinating wolverines are sure to impress.
The park is also home to Scotland’s rarest native creature, the Scottish Wildcat, and you can find out all about the plans to save this endangered species.
Five Sisters Zoo, West Lothian
The recent arrival Rufio is the star attraction here, you can see it in its specially constructed enclosure.
What was originally just a garden center with a small collection of rabbits, guinea pigs, goats and pigs, has grown into one of Scotland’s best zoos, providing homes for animals rescued after having performed in traveling circuses.
Now home to over 180 different species, there are daily keeper chats, lemur food, animal encounters, and great outdoor play.
SEALIFE, Loch Lomond

Scottish Deer Center
While their 12 species of deer are the stars of the show, with reindeer, sika deer and the enigmatic Reeves Muntjac Deer just a few of the herds you’ll find, the center is home to many other exciting creatures as well.
You’ll find long-lost animals in the Scottish countryside, including the European lynx and brown bear, as well as a magnificent array of birds of prey in their raptor center.
If that’s not enough to captivate even the pickiest kids, there’s also a tree walk and go-kart track for an added element of fun.
